If you know me well (or at least have been watching me for a while) you know I'm a die-hard 80's-90's manga/anime fan. A lot of the plot components are nothing new, but there's a certain magic about the older, grit-n-dirt creations that still have that palpable charm about them *at least for me*. It's safe to say that stories like these were slightly less cheap than what we have today.
Anyway.
This character here isn't as random as she looks, but she's a fan character and I'm kind of shy and embarrassed about those So no, I won't say who she is/where she's from. Needless to say she was very fun to draw
Agreed, although its not the ONLY aspect of modern manga that is over done. Is it just me or have tsunderes gone OVER board? Its like Love-Hina, they exploited the hell out of it (too much) and it turned out to be a successful series and every one is just copying it in hopes of being popular.
Though to be honest their are many many more tropes they stick too tightly too, okay, we have our Tsundere... our Moe... ah yes and our loli... okay female characters set.
And then there's spiky hair, big swords, "be the very best" and "regret/redemption" complexs, and the not-so-subtle-anymore references to Norse mythology (Ragnarok, Midgard, the Norns....Sephiroth). I think that covers it for male characters. Almost.
As for the spiky hair, its about having an easy way of making the characters look different given that other than hair and some times outfit characters tend to look almost identical.
The "be the very best" and "regret/redemption" is over done too, but its an easy angle to write about, ie its lazy...
Though I don't mind Norse mythology stuff as much, but that's probably because I am mostly germanic/Scandinavian. And I can pull off a good Odin when I want to dress up for it. As for its prevalance in anime, lets look at Japans world view on relevant places in the world... Japan... USA... Germany... China (because they have to)... Scandinavia (which one isn't important)... those other places that might exist in the world. Is this fair to the rest of the world, probably not, but it is what it is, and I can understand if you don't care for it.
